Job Summary:
The Timber Buyer is responsible for the procurement of timber products and materials in support of forestry operations. This role requires a deep understanding of forestry practices, sustainable sourcing, and environmental regulations. The Timber Buyer will collaborate with various stakeholders, including landowners, loggers, suppliers, and internal teams, to ensure the efficient and sustainable acquisition of timber resources. Accuracy, attention to detail, and strong negotiation skills are essential for success in this role.
Key Responsibilities:
- Identify and evaluate potential timber sources, analyzing factors such as species, quality, quantity, and sustainability.
- Conduct negotiations with landowners, timber suppliers, and contractors to secure timber resources at competitive prices and acceptable terms and conditions.
- Collaborate with internal teams to determine timber requirements, ensuring alignment with operational needs and sustainability objectives.
- Monitor and assess market trends, pricing, and availability of timber products to make informed purchasing decisions.
- Ensure compliance with local, regional, and national environmental regulations, as well as sustainable forestry practices.
- Maintain accurate records of timber purchases, contracts, and related documentation.
- Conduct regular site visits to assess timber quality, quantities, and adherence to environmental standards.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders, including landowners, loggers, suppliers, and forestry associations.
- Stay updated on industry advancements, emerging technologies, and best practices in timber procurement.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Agriculture, Environmental Science, Forestry, or a related field.
- Proven experience in timber procurement or related roles within the forestry industry.
- In-depth knowledge of forestry practices, sustainable sourcing, and environmental regulations.
- Strong negotiation skills, with the ability to secure favorable terms and conditions for timber procurement.
- Proficient in analyzing timber quality, quantities, and market trends to make informed purchasing decisions.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships with various stakeholders.
- Detail-oriented and organized, with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills to assess timber sources and address challenges.
- Familiarity with forestry software and tools for data analysis and record-keeping.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, demonstrating flexibility and adaptability in a dynamic environment.
